History of the towel warmer

Dec 22, 2022

The towel warmer was not like this at the beginning of its invention, and it has had a long process of development. After years of continuous improvement and innovation, the towel warmer has gathered human wisdom and craftsmanship, driving the development of the whole industry to become what it is today, with many forms and different specifications, widely used in a variety of areas such as homes, hotels.

The birth of the towel radiator can be found in the invention of the "radiator".   According to history the radiator was invented by a Russian, named Franz San Galli, while living in St. Petersburg, Russia around 1855. These radiators, when filled with boiling water, helped warm homes by acting as ‘space-heaters’. This system is the predecessor of the modern central heating system we know today.

The radiator forms part of a central heating system whereby a boiler heats water, which is pumped through a series of pipes into a home to heat a room.  A radiator would be placed in a room in order to provide more heat in that room.

As bathrooms were heated in this fashion, towels or articles of clothing were placed on the radiator to dry - hence, the arrival of the towel warmer. The 1920s saw the birth of the cast iron water heated towel warmer, commonly referred to as a "bath radiator."

In China, some radiator factories started in the 1970s in the northern China, producing cast iron radiators for central heating system. But real towel radiators only started around the year of 2000.

Since towel radiator started to develop into an independent product category from radiator, with development of modern industry, it evolved from cast iron, low carbon steel, and then into different materials like aluminum, stainless steel, and even glass, slate, etc. in terms of material. The heating power also developed from relying on central heating system into being independent with electricity, and hence it becomes from a product only enjoyed by the northern areas, mainly in Europe, into something favored by many people also in the south and other areas in the world, like North America, South America, Oceania, Asia, and even Africa. Although people in the south do not need a space heater, bathroom is always a place of high humidity, and damp towels are always annoying.
